The newly reconstituted Board of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has been officially inaugurated, with a directive from the Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to prioritize the reduction of the cost of doing business at Ghana’s ports.
At the inauguration ceremony held last week, Hon. Nikpe emphasized the need for the Board to work closely with the private sector to develop the Keta Port into a complementary petroleum products delivery hub. He also charged the Board to enhance Ghana’s transit trade by improving corridor security and eliminating barriers and harassment along trade routes.
The Minister further urged the Board to address key challenges contributing to high port operational costs. These include taxes on transit cargo, high shipping line charges, demurrage fees, and the overlapping roles of multiple state agencies at the ports. He stressed the need for the Authority to remain competitive, particularly in the face of increasing competition from neighbouring ports.
